What is Contaminated Soil?

Soil with a presence of manmade chemicals in the natural soil environment, usually caused by industrial activities, use of agricultural chemicals, or improper waste disposal.
For example, when an underground storage tank (UST) ruptures or leaches waste in soil, or asbestos contaminated soil during demolition.

Common Contaminants are:

  • Metals such as: arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, mercury, lead, selenium, They usually come from industrial and manufacturing activities.

  • Hydrocarbons such as: petroleum(benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, xylene), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs): coal, gas, wood, garbage. They usually come from gas stations, industrial and commercial areas.

  • Solvents ie. chemicals, usually come from machine shops or dry cleaning places.

  • Pesticides which usually come from industrial and commercial area where they were mixed.

Why you should remove Contaminated Soil on Construction Sites?

We help remove any liability of environmental risk associated with a property. Often those who are buying real estate, or dealing with banks that require removal of contaminated soil hire us to help them meet their deadlines.

Contaminated Soil Remediation Process

Soil Analysis
First step is to test the soil for contaminants by having a certified local soils engineer conduct a soil sampling to obtain samples from different areas to determine level of contamination PPM (parts per million or mg/L).

Following the complete soil analysis, depending on the level of contamination found, we would work with you to apply an appropriate treatment.

  • Low soil contamination - treated by: soil washing, evaporation, landfill

  • High soil contamination - treated by: excavation & treatment on site or off site, in-site capping, chemical oxidation

  • Hazardous soil contamination - treated by: thermal oxidizer, secured landfill

After contaminated soil has been identified, we safely remove it from the property and transport it to an authorized landfill for disposal or treatment.

New topsoil is tested, trucked in and distribute throughout the site to replace the old soil.

We sometimes mix contaminated soil with fresh soil to reduce the level of contamination to mee
